| Shawn Warner - 2010-04-27 - 2010 Season - Race #3 Trials Report |
On Saturday, April 17th 2010 the AVDRA Observed Trials season finale took place at Speedworld Motorsports Park. Due to the heat of the day (the high was reported at 92 degF on Saturday), just 7 Sections were laid out early Saturday morning. The sections, mostly using the freshly bulldozed areas around the vintage track, used largely a one-line format. There were a few breaks for 3's and 4's, but mostly the Novice Riders rode the same Line as the Experts. This decision was made because the fresh bulldozed areas made for some loose riding, that challenged every skill level, but didn't pose any safety issues based on skill level...if that makes sense. We also ran a section over several large concrete pads, two of which were spaced just about the length of a motorcycle, which didn't seem scary until you rode it...!!! Five riders entered the event and after a quick meeting under Joe Reeds EZ-Up, we headed to the trail... After riding two sections, Rich Palmer suggested we ride each section three times for one loop, rather than ride three loops. Two of us weren't feeling top-notch and it was hot...so we agreed this would be the best format as it would speed-up the trial. At the end of the event, the days points were as follows: In the Vintage Intermediate Category, Eric Hodgins took the win with 33 points on his Yamaha TY 175. Great ride Eric...!!! Yours truly scored 35 points on my "new" Yamaha TY 250, as it was its first trial...considering I just finished putting it together a short time ago, I was pleased with its performance. In the Twin-Shock Expert Class, Rich Palmer also scored 35 points on his Montesa 348. Hope you get to feeling better soon Rich... In the Modern Expert Class...Joe Reed scored 12 points on his Beta Techno. Another impressive ride Joe...!!! For the Modern Novice class, Joe's son Eric Lee scored 54 points on his GasGas. Eric had an impressive first attempt at Sections 4 and 5, which were ridden back-to-back. Eric rode the concrete pads, Section 4, and into Section 5, which was primarily loose dirt, looking like a true pro...until momentum caught up with him and he lost balance, high-sided, rolled down a small hill on his back and stopped with his feet uphill. We need to take more pictures at these events... While all agreed riding the one-loop format was not as fun as three loops, it was the right decision for this trial. Speedworld personnel were eager to lock-up the park and my guess, get to work on the other side of the property preparing for the Lucas Oil Truck Races. The reason it wasn't as fun, is riding three loops takes more time, thus gives riders considerably more opportunity to walk and discuss sections each loop, and riding the one-loop is somewhat easier since you are riding the same section immediately one after another. It was a great trial to end this season. I want to thank everyone who has attended AVDRA Trials this year. I had a great time and hope you enjoyed yourselves also. Jim has ridden with us in the past, but recently decided to focus his efforts on motocross and sold his Ossa MAR 250. Jim is the owner of the pristine TT500 and HL500 Yamaha's that were parked nearby. After laying out the sections with me early in the morning, Jim erected some fences on the motocross track, then went to Home Depot to pick up stakes, ribbon and staples for our next trial (as we were running low) and then returned to the track to help with the Points and Awards. Jim doesn't ride the trials with us, but he plays an enormous role in its success. Thanks Jim. And lastly, thanks to our sponsor Dave Boydstun and Nancy Ferguson and AVDRA. Nancy, I would like to take a minute and thank a couple of people who made it possible for Trish and myself to compete on Sunday. Larry Selby loaned Trish a Honda 150cc so that she could compete in the modern women's class. Dave with the Metamucil Militia loaned me his Vintage 250 Bultaco so that I could compete in the 60+ intermediate class. By Dave loaning me his bike I was able to line up with Wes Willis and Bill Silverthorne something I have been wanting to do since I joined AVDRA. I'm sorry Gene Fetty was injured and could not join in the fun. It is people like this that make this sport/AVDRA so unique. This is the Best Group of Riders I have ever been associated with. Duel-In-The-Desert - Wittman Arizona - 02-05-2010 - 02-07-2010 Hey Fellow Vintage Buddy's .... Just got back from The Opener "Dual in the Desert" ... What a Good Tyme ... It did rain Late afternoon Saturday and all Evening ..... But All the Days ... Friday / Saturday & Sunday we were Blessed with Good Sunshine and Great Weather ... It's always so good to see so many old friend and meet new one and being the opener of the new season .. most everyones bykes looks shiney new .... Dave Boydstrom desirves a tip of the hat .... He always come though and provides us with such a Great Event .... Sunday for the Vintage races ... being that the Track was way to wet to race on Dave change the Location to the near by Desert .... and I think it fair to say .... All had a good tyme ... I couldnt help but think of my youth ... when a couple buddy and myself would load up the byke's in the back of a pickup truck and head out to the desert ... and proceed to chase one and other around the pucka-bushes in 4th or 5th gear... I could see the same silly grin I had thirty years ago ... on the faces of the ryders coming off the impromtu track today ..... Man !! How Kool is this sport !!! The 2010 AVDRA Vintage National Trial is now complete. Despite only six entries, we had an outstanding event. Ten sections were run over three loops... of course, all our AVDRA events are buddy check and that is one of the reasons we have so much fun. This year we had to layout the event the morning of the trial. Speedworld had a few large events the past few weekends that used most of the property and thus didn't want anyone on course laying out a trial... understandable, of course. So AVDRA motocrossers Jim Rike and Steve Bower, and myself constructed the course Friday morning. Thanks a ton guys... At 1PM we had a quick riders meeting and we all headed to Section 1... we rode Sections 1 and 2, which were easy warm-up sections and close together... and were about to move on and realized we were missing one person. Where is Tom Rogers...? Rather than proceed to Section 3, we all decided to go find Tom... we discovered him kicking his Montesa 348 in front of his motorhome. Jim Wagner, Harley-Davidson mechanic by trade and trials event comic by desire, quickly took control of the situation and had the 348 running in no time... We then rode to Section 3 and decided Tom could catch-up Sections 1 and 2 later. We had begun walking the section and collectively decided that one turn was too tight to make unless you can execute a Bernie Schrieber floater turn... and had begun to move tapes, when Joe Reed arrived. Joe had some trouble with traffic on Grand Ave and also missed Sections 1 and 2... no biggie, he can make them up later too. This year we used a few older sections from past events, but most of the 10 sections were new... never been used before. We tried to add more climbs than in the past, one section was fairly muddy thanks to the recent rains and we also laid out a tight-turning section in the sand of the main arroyo that runs through the property. And speaking of rain, the grip was quite good this event... just damp enough for great traction. Section 7 we all enjoyed as it included two short uphill climbs then a step-down the other side... thus you couldn't see the downhill as you crested the rise. We finished up the trial about 4:45PM... picked up the sections and headed for scoring to submit our cards. Jerry Rewerts comes all the way from Iowa to ride AVDRA (and the AHRMA trials and motocross next weekend) the last few years. Jerry rode a beautiful BSA in the Dinosaur class on Line # 3 to 63 points. Thanks again for coming Jerry, great to see you...!!! In the vintage category, Jim Wagner rode the # 1 Line on a Yamaha TY 175 to a score of 14 points... 14 points, holy cow! Was anyone watching this guy, did anyone actually witness 14 points for the day...? I am going to need a notarized affidavit to consider this official...!!! Seriously, congrats on the low score for the event Jim. And thanks for all your help and support. Also riding the vintage class, although on the # 3 Line... riding his first event on a very clean Bultaco Alpina and coming all the way from Tucson, was UofA Grad Student John Shadeck with a score of 29 marks. Great ride John. All remarked John has the athletic ability to be a great trials rider. Hope to see you again soon... Riding the twin-shock class were Tom Rogers on his Montesa 348 scoring 36 marks and yours truly, on a Bultaco Sherpa T. I actually surprised myself with 21 marks... maybe I was riding looser because I had laid out the trial that morning... or maybe it was the Denny's grand-slam breakfast before the trial. Hmmm... Tom searched for his rhythm after getting a late start, but once he did he rode quite well and managed to clean each section at least once (except Section 9, the sandy turning section)... and was a big help cleaning up the sections at the end of the event, putting supplies away, etc. Thanks again Tom and good luck on Sundays motocross...!!! And wrapping up the days entries, riding a modern Beta on the single-shock class and the #1 Line...was Joe Reed. Joe had a score of 20 marks. Great ride Joe and thanks for all the support. Of course, we'd like to see more of a turn-out... the economy has an impact on people doing things, and a few of the AVDRA trials regulars have had some bumps in their lives and we at AVDRA wish them well... Those of you that haven't ridden with us, we sure would like to see you... if you are chasing points with CAT or AHRMA, ride an AVDRA trial as a warm-up for the event that is important to you... Or just come out and have some fun, we are close to just about anyone in the Valley. And lastly, due to some scheduling conflicts... the AVDRA event that was scheduled for Feb 20th has been canceled. So the next AVDRA trial is Saturday April 17th. We hope to see you there...!!! |

Well I hate to bring this news to all...But AVDRA has experienced its first ever complete rain out. Yes, Monticello, UT was a "wash out." BUT we have re-scheduled for July 25 & 26, 2009. There may even be Trials as well. More on that as time goes by. If you entered the Monticello race, I have your entry and will keep it for the re-scheduled date. OR you can call or e-mail me and use it towards another AVDRA National. If you came to Monticello and hung out with us you will be receiving something from us soon. We (I) am working on a VIP card for you. This is good for ONE race that maybe you forgot to enter or you did not know if you could get out of work, finish your "honey do" list in time...whatever the reason, you will not be charged the post-entry fee. I guess you can say it is kind of like a "get out of jail free card". We had a great time in Utah. Dave and I went up on Wednesday and had a blast on Thursday. We put about 50 miles on our scooter. If you have been to Monticello you know that is a lot of miles for the little 2-mile long town. Thursday night/ Friday morning it rained on us all night long. Friday was not the best day, as this was when many were coming in. I spent hours on the phone trying to get a hold of all the riders (that I had numbers for) to let them know NOT to go to the track. By Friday afternoon our little RV Park was full of Vintage folks. Bill Ramsey did a great job of keeping the drive "gardened” He had his rake out and kept the ruts as cleaned up as he could. Thanks a Million Bill!!! Saturday was a great day we had a blast, some were working on bikes, some playing cards, or just hanging out. Saturday night we had a super cook out we had close to 40 people there. Then got to watch the opening round of "Outdoor Motorcross", thanks to Ray McCarty and Tim Swanson. All was great until about 12:45 am and then it started raining, it stopped for just a bit then came back and just DUMPED for hours and hours. We spoke with Joe the owner of Bull Hollow and he said he just did not think it was going to be able to happen. So we had to reschedule for the end of July. (July 25 & 26) We are so sorry that this had to take place. We are so grateful to all of the rides and families that came and just had to hang out instead of ride. Some of them came over 1000 miles and a few other drove well over 800 miles. Hat off to all of you, you are all the greatest!!! In AVDRA's history Dave has never had to completely cancel an event, he has had to cut it short after the first motos though. Again Thanks for understanding and being so great through all of this. Don't forget that Metcalf, in San Jose is in 3 weeks June 14th, 2009. Entries will close on Sunday, June 7th, 2009. Then 3 weeks later is Glen Helen, CA first weekend of July. Looks like it just going to be one day of racing...July 5th but more on that later. Then 3 weeks later is the make up race for Monticello, July 25 & 26, 2009. Hey Dave, I just want to send a shout out to you and all the hardworking crew at AVDRA for the awesome "Round 7 at the Glen" event July 20th. Everything ran smoothly, we had a great turnout in spite of the high fuel prices, track layout fantastic, overall a memorable vintage event for everybody involved. Walking around I heard alot of positive comments from the guys along the lines of "This is how it used to be.." Well here's to keepin it that way! Its great when everybody gets on the same page and we all benefit from the co-operation...Okay, now my man Dennis over at http://www.jdfotography.com has posted the July 20 shots so check em out! He was workin hard in the sun documenting this event for y'all and has whittled it down to the best 7 or 8 hundred some shots...no kidding, aint digital photography great! Alrighty now we have some more vint mx com'in up here in so-cal in August and Sept for everybody that cant get enough so hopefully we can all get together agin real soon...In the meantime we are planning a winter vacation weekend in AZ, you can count on it lad, take care.... I'd like to thank Tom and Laura for stopping by to help us when we ran out of fuel on I-10 Sunday night after the Glen Helen race. Tom ruined his race gas container by filling it with 5 gallons of diesel for us! Laura kept me company while the guys fetched fuel and tried to prime the pump. (Didn't work - the shoulder was too steep.) Bill and Gussy also stopped by, just after Tom and Laura left while we were waiting for a tow truck. You meet the nicest people at AVDRA races! BTW, if you see Tom, please tell him there'll be a new gas can waiting for him at Bill Ramsey's. Should be in by the end of the week. I don't have Tom and Laura's email address, so I cannot send this to them directly, but Tim and I are very thankful for their help. We made it home just fine a day later than planned. |

Dear Dave People never write when things go good for them at a event. I've raced 4 different tracks this year ( D.D. , Taft , Barona Oaks & Glen Helen ), two ( Taft , Glen Helen ) were run by ADVRA . You ran the most efficient programs. I hope you return to Taft in 2009 and I hope if you ever run again at Glen Helen there is no other races going on that weekend ( espcially 4 stroke quads ). I also hope you can have a race at Barona Oaks ( I liked the course ). I hope I can run at more tracks next year . I hope to have my 72 Maico 250 square barrel going ( tranny problems ) soon. Dave HELP, I have been forced to buy a 450 KTM to race in the really old guys class in the Florida Trail Riders H/S series. 2 hrs is hard on the old body. Please bring AVDRA East so I can use my Vintage Husky and PV Suzukis. Your series just looks like so much fun. I have sworn off that other group (ahrma) and the East coast YZ guys have their stuff in moth balls for the same reason. Hope this finds you in good Health and with 2 whls. in the dirt. Fred |

What a weekend. Dave and I arrived on Thursday so we could set up and get a feel for the track, owner, workers, and people in general. We were blessed with wonderful weather. Had a good visit with several of the folks there. Thursday night was "Mini Bike Night" I had never seen so many mini bikes before in one place. There must have been close to 100 total. Kids from 3 years old up to middle aged adults on these little things. What a kick to watch the dads run around and help their little ones out. Then there was the grown men on 50's, they would reach down and pick up their bikes with one hand to move them. What a hoot. Friday dawned another pretty day, just kicked back most of the day until mid afternoon. Then it was time to start getting ready for sign up. AVDRA friends start arriving as well. It’s always fun to see friends we have not seen in a month or longer. Had a good evening with all our friends. Saturday morning another great one starts off and we got over 30 post entries and several new memberships. The race day went off without any problems and most everybody enjoyed the track. Most had to stay on top of things and pay close attention to the track. It was a very different track than most were used to. (Could be a good thing??) The race day was over early as entries were down some. But we had NO injuries all day so it was a GOOD day at the races! Saturday evening we are watching the news and hear that we are under wind advisory, so David says we need to take a few things down outside. So at 10:30 PM here we go outside I look around and say I think they were talking about other areas in the So Cal area. It was just calm as could be. Not the case at 11:30 PM I wake up thinking that the vents on the motor home are being ripped off the top of the motor home, as well as the antenna. So I get up and close everything look out see the easy-ups are still in place. I get back in bed only to get back up every hour or so checking on things. When we get up in the morning David tells me that one of our easy-ups is bent over in half. After I go outside we decide real quick that there is NO way we can do sign up outside so everything must come out of the back of the motor home. Yep, it's a good thing Laura, Candy and I like one another as we were very up close and personal during sign up. It all worked out good and we had about 20 or so more post entries. When some of the dads found out that their little guys could race with us, here comes more entries and memberships. Sometime during sign up someone comes up and said that we had a couple of earthquakes during the night. Well those of us at the track never felt an earthquake as the wind was so bad. But all (most) in the motels felt them. There were a couple of us (Donna and myself) that were disappointed. She has never felt one and me I lived out there half my life and it has been quite some time since I got to feel one. Anyhow the Vintage guys were not looking forward to a day in the wind and they did not change up the track sooo... it was going to be a tough day on our Vintage friends. But they were troopers and had a good day of racing. We did have one crash BUT he is ok. Despite the wind and jumps it was another good day at the races. I want to thank the crew for making the crew...Laura Rogers, Candy Morgan, their husbands who helped out on the starting line Saturday Tom Rogers and Owen Morgan. David was our finish line both days. Roger Kenyon was our starter on Sunday and we broke in his sweet girlfriend Donna and she now knows how to keep score!! Thanks you to all of the local AZ friends that made the trip. I don't want to leave anyone out I am not going to mention any BUT you know who you are THANK YOU for your continued support!!!! Thanks to Ric Tipton and Guy Coulston along with Donny Gardner for making the trip from Nor- Cal and Donny all the way from Oregon. And now to all who came out for a weekend of racing weather you drove an hour or five minutes ....Thank you; without each and every one of you we could not make this happen. Dave and Nancy, I just wanted to say thanks for putting on the event at Milestone. I had an absolute blast. I have to admit that after practice I thought I wasn't going to be able to ride that track but by the second moto I was getting somewhat comfortable with it. I even caught myself riding a little over my skill level and backed off a bit. I did bottom out my suspension a few times on those kickers and found it a bit difficult to slow down enough for them. I'm sure that speeding up would have solved that problem as well but that would have been riding over my head again. I met so many nice people and really had a fun time. My son said that he enjoyed it and is looking forward to the next race. He even said he might try riding the mini bike again. It was the whole family feel and Dave's comments about practice and riding sessions that made Stephen feel comfortable. I'm not sure I could have convinced him to give riding another try on my own...Thanks Dave. I hope I can bring my stepson next time. I know he'd love to try riding on the track. I'll be racing with CALVMX at Barona on March 22nd and look forward to racing with AVDRA again at Taft in April. Thanks again, Jim Nicholson 88q |

Dave and Nancy, Sorry, I should have sent this sooner. A very big thanks to you and everyone else who had a part in the weekend. The mood, the atmosphere was so relaxed, for the first time after a race I wasn't in my truck on the way home five minutes after my last race. Up here in the Northwest, we have talked about something like this for years and we will be eternally grateful to you guys for taking the risk. Whatever I can do to help, just ask. Carlos Serrano was the honored Legend of MX at the recent 12th annual Dual in the Desert at Speedworld Raceway Park in Phoenix. The event was the season opening race in the 2008 AVDRA Western States Vintage Moto Cross Series. Carlos presented each competitor with their trophy and autographed it at the closing ceremonies. He also raced in two classes scoring a runner up finish in GP 50+ Expert and a fourth place in GP II 500 Expert. Most importantly, Carlos and the rest of the Baja Arizona Posse had a great time seeing old friends at the races! Serrano is also leading the points in the AVDRA District 1 2007-2008 Championship in GP 50+ Expert. Our thanks to Dave Boydstun for a great weekend of racing and to Mike Marsing of WPS for the terrific Fly gear. Our very special thanks go out to Jack Dillon and Ken Saunders of Eastside Cycle in Tucson for more than 30 years of friendship and support. The attached photos are of Carlos from this past weekend at Speedworld on his '81 Maico 490 and from the 1981 AMA SX race at Anaheim Stadium on the factory Maico 250.

Super job on DiD 12!! As always it was super fun and the track, facility and event management were great. It was great for me to see many of the old faces and you should be proud of the support you are getting from people outside of your area. I think if you remain focused on what you said at the rider's meeting about running the events for the enjoyment of the participants, I think you will have a great series and a growing membership. CONGRATULATIONS!! Dear Nancy, Dave, and Mark, I want to congratulate you all for a great weekend of exciting motorcycle events. The 12th annual “Duel In The Desert” seemed (at my level) to go extremely smooth with minimum of impediment. Dave, your visions for the future of our club are here at last. You, Mark, and the Western States Vintage Moto Cross Series should be very proud of this First National Event. It took a lot of people to make this happen under the guidance of you all and the results were superb. I’m sure it would have been more difficult without Nancy’s keen eye and her continuous attack on the not so obvious details that were needed to connect many loose ends together. Nancy, you’re behind the scenes effort and devotion was noticed by many and to you Many Hugs and a Heart filled Thank You! It goes without saying that Mark your friendship with Dave and many of us riders, fans, & family shows in the devotion you have to our sport. Your unselfish travels to Arizona and desire to assist in the smooth function of each event can only be contagious. The leadership and same mind-set as that of Dave’s has allowed for a multiple source of information and guidance. Your help to me as a new rider is greatly appreciated. Nancy, I remember when you first came with Dave to a Sunday event and how much you looked like you weren’t sure if you should be here. Your eyes seemed to be asking “What the hell have I gotten myself into”! As time went by and you became more comfortable with these lunatics call “Vintage Motocross” riders you went from “keep the dirt away from my clothes” to “dirt-what-dirt” of a lady. How you have learned the lingo of motorcycles, vast knowledge of acronyms, and the ways of motorcycles in such a short time is a credit to your love for Dave and the sport he calls work and FUN. I know this sound too much like a testimonial but these thoughts have gone too long without mentioning. I write this not for publishing and notoriety but from one that has appreciated the continued friendship of very special people. Thank you, Jerry Ott P.S. Am sitting here in my office licking my sore muscles and pondering this last weekends event, Duel in the Desert 12. I had an awesome three days and the comradery with old friends and new ones was just as good as always. Friday was a great Cross Country layout and although my bike problems hampered my laps times, I still finished and managed to only get lapped once by Mr. Coupe. Saturday's GP MX was also great as always and the track stayed tacky all day. Did they even water it? I didn't compete, but did get a chance to talk to Jed Bates at the Trials and they set up a pretty cool trials event. Low key, but not in the difficulty area. Looks like the riders were having a good time. They did have some really good riders and it was Donna's first exposure to what a Trials event was all about. She had no idea someone could do those things with a motorcycle. I worked the starting line on Sunday and had a little fun with Dave Coupe. Bruce and I started putting rocks on his concrete starting pad and I even set an 18" concrete block under his gate at one point so it would not drop. He is a great sport and loves to goof around. Also, working the starting line was quite an eye opening experience for me. I had no idea that such a minor thing could consume so much energy. Making sure everyone was in the correct race and gate and verifying with the tower number corrections and missing starters. Lots of work. Once again, my eyes have become wider as to the amount of energy and work that you and the AVDRA crew must do to pull off such a great event. Hal did a great job of announcing and once again I find it amazing that someone can talk so long and still have a voice! I was also very pleased that there were no major incidents and no ambulance rides! A safe weekend!!!! If you get a chance to talk to Dan Mathew's, thank him and his crew for me for hosting the event and prepping three great tracks. Oh, and the Dirt Track and TT which I did not get a chance to see. And finally, Thank you, Thank You, Thank You for keeping the politics at a minimum. We didn't come there to hear about the political stuff going on right now. If anything, we went there to get away from it. We just wanted to race and have a great time and you provided that and more. Thanks again, and I can't wait until next year. Roger Kenyon |

We made it through double races back to back. Again, weather threatened to not be on our side, but held off until after the races were over. Dave was ready to move to the desert if he needed to. We got to the track early Saturday morning. It looked like it was going to downpour all day, yet it only misted two or three times on us. We had some SPICY chili, yummy meatballs, and Mexican cornbread for our Pot-Luck Saturday evening. Then Thanks to Ed Kavanagh and his son Justin, they borrowed a motor home again WITH Direct TV, and we got to sit and watch Super Cross Live. We were all huddled under the covered area with heaters around us. Thanks to Pam Gorman, she showed up with her famous Brownies for dessert. (Thanks to all who helped out with the food!) Just as we were going to sleep, I heard the rain start. I said "David do you hear that?" His reply was “Nope I don't hear a thing." All day on Saturday he kept saying it was not going to rain. So off to sleep praying that it stopped soon!!! I was up at 5:30 and outside to start the coffee. It had rained a little and smelled great, but NO Puddles or anything. After it got light we could see that it had barely rained. Randy (the tractor driver) said he had to water a couple areas that he cut in. As usual the first one in the gat was Mark Baird up from Tucson. He has truly been bitten by the Vintage Racing Bug. And is he ever riding good. Mark you have come along way in the last 5 races!!! We had just over 75 entries; not what we would have liked to see, but not bad due to weather and back to back races. Took in 6 new entries and one renewal (yea Suzette's back racing) so pretty good considering it was raining all around us. I hate to say we had two kids get hurt. First one was Luke Morari in the mini class. He and Garrett got tangled up and both went down. Luke suffers from a broken wrist and hurt knee. We will know more this Friday on him. Garrett walk/rode away unhurt...UNTIL his Vintage race. I am not sure what happened, but he went down and when we came up I said it’s his arm. Yes, he broke his upper arm. Good news for Garrett he may have got an extra day off from school. Both boys should recover great and both have very good pain meds for now. I never like to see anybody get hurt, most of all our kids, as you know they are very close to my heart. But they do recover a little faster than us older folks. That pretty much sums up our weekend at the track. Hats off to all that came out and supported AVDRA this past weekend. PLEASE remember to get your ENTRIES IN NO LATER THAT JANUARY 28TH for the National (2/8, 9, 10.) You will be able to sign up at the track, but will have to pay $10.00 more per entry. I don't want you to have to do that. Remember that in the next week or so you can enter online. Please keep a check on the website as we are adding to it nearly everyday. I will send out a couple e-mails between now and the National in February. Sorry I did not get something written up for the RAD Race. I was sick the beginning of the week and then slammed getting ready for the next race. Good news, Bob McDowell is ok after taking a fall and being a part of the track (he got run over). He did bruise a rib, but nothing was broken. He is sore but will be back with us for the National. Diana McDowell also went down and twisted her ankle...BUT did not break it, so she too will be back with us in February. Had a HUGE turnout! 145 total riders including our "first timers." Way to go AVDRA members for sharing your love of Vintage Bikes with those around you. We just keep growing and growing. As of today (1/7/08) we have 211 members!!! The AVDRA name is out and others like what they see in you, and are joining from around the country. Thank you for being who you are and making AVDRA what it is. What a weekend… We got to the track a little after 1:00 pm Saturday afternoon and what a mess. Our little vintage track had a good two feet of water on most of her, a little more in some places and not quite that much on others. I thought a Jet Ski race was on tap. Dave looked at me and said “we are going to ride out in the desert. Randy our tractor driver said, “Man I can have this track ready by tomorrow morning.” (Hats off to him and his cousin Roger for having the national track ready for practice this morning.) Dave said “there aint NO WAY man, we are going to race the desert just like way back in the day.” An hour after getting there Dave and Tim Thomas #33u take off to the desert in the golf cart. About 45 minutes later here they come with big grins on their faces. “Yep we have it all figured out, we need to get some tape and stakes.” So back out they go. It was windy and cold and looked like it could rain at any minute for several hours. But they got it all taken care of. Sunday morning was a tad chilly, but after carting all our race stuff over to the sand drag pits we were ready to start the day off. Sorry there was no directions to let ya’ll know that was where we were. I think it all turned out well. I never heard anyone complain about the track. (Sorry GP bikes that there was no jumps over 2 feet tall.) I think all enjoyed the hand on helmet start. I had several older guys that really did enjoy the day…took them back a few years. During trophy’s Dave asked if the riders wanted to do this type of track once a year. All but one said yes. (Sorry Salena) What about the half-time race??? The “Buddy Race” was something to watch. Way to go “Team Kenyon” Roger was LAST off the start (which was a dead-engine start), but by the second lap they were way out in the lead. Hats off to the two new GIRLS (Taylor Tait and Christine Kenyon) today they each took home first place trophies!! Congrats to Kyle Kenyon on his new ability level…He is now a proud Intermediate. A BIG thanks to those who came from out of state… Jonathan Bren from New York, John Hart from Las Vegas, NV, and Himey Means from Earp, CA, (if I missed someone sorry.) Yes, we did have potluck dinner on Saturday and had lots to spare!! But the Thomas’, Jim Rike, Dave and myself did not go hungry. I will bring out the left-over’s on the 30th. I hope to see all of you at the next race, and if you missed this one, then please know that you were missed. A.V.D.R.A’s first race of the 2007-2008 season was a HUGE success! We were just a little worried about it being a night race, and then we get to the track Friday night to find high winds and rain off and on all night. All of Saturday as we worked on the track to get ready for the race, it threatened to rain. BUT as time went on the weather turned out to be wonderful, and nothing but a breeze to cool things off. I enjoyed meeting the new faces that have joined A.V.D.R.A. this season. Everybody seemed to have a good time and said they would be back next month. As always the kid’s race seemed to be the big draw or was it Carlos Serrano’s races?? Any how it was a great night of racing and just hanging out with the A.V.D.R.A. family. After this first race we now have over 100 memberships!!! I remember last year in December having about 130. And by the end of the year we had well over 150 memberships. We were missing quite a few of our regulars due to it being a night race and other activities. I can’t wait for next month to see them. We will go back to our regular schedule and will be racing on Sundays. And starting back up in October are the Saturday night pot luck dinners with lots of bench racing around the fire pit. One last thing, I just wanted to mention that Nic Gerardi had a nasty fall last night, but my last check on him he seemed to be his perky self. Probably pretty sore today though. A big thank you to all who got to come out and race, watch, help, and etc. A.V.D.R.A. is what it is because of all the great members we have in our family. See you next month. Nancy F. |

Absolutely…super job by Dave and Nancy. Another great banquet with great food, great people and lots of banter around our favorite subject: vintage dirt bikes…!!! Ironically, I was just thinking on Saturday how Zack seems to go thru bikes quickly due to his growth rate…while younger brother Mitch has ridden hand-me down machines. And the ole’ Suzook 8o is looking plenty tired. So last night we decided that the RM goes up for sale and Mitch will ride the new mini with the other kids…until he is ready for the 125 assembled from the two bikes we got from Steve Prinke. Then we will keep the mini as the family fun / pit bike…that way we will all get plenty use out of it. Whoo-hoo…it’s just now sinking in that I actually won the bike…!!! Thanks, I am pretty proud of this achievement but during the season I saw who the real Iron Men Are. Like the guys in their 70’s and 80’s that are still Racing Or the guy with knees so bad he can’t even start his own bike but races anyway Or the guy that takes in a nephew like one of his own and makes sure he is good to go on race day Or the gal that breaks the front ends off her bike, takes a nasty spill, walks away and comes back to race again, Or the college kid that while taking a full load of classes rides every race on the national schedule and every regional he can get to and pulls straight A’s Or the guy that only has enough extra cash for one entry so he let’s his son race instead of himself Or the guys that wake up every day and choose to stay clean and sober. Or the race promoter that year in year out race after race makes sure all we have to do is show up pay our entry and race Or the guy flat on his back with Paramedics looking up and asking me “aren’t you in this moto? You better get going. These are the real Iron Men and Women, These are people I count among my friends and I am proud of it. Ed Kavanagh 2 time Iron Man About AVDRA We have all heard the clichés such as you never miss the water until the well runs dry or the grass is greener on the other side. Well I was one of those guys when I first started racing with the AVDRA. I had all the normal “Observations” such as. They need to do more to increase membership We should race at other tracks The motos are too short There should be more classes The trophies should be better The track is too technical In the past 2 years I have had the pleasure to race 12 national races in AZ, CO, CA, OH, and TX. And from my perspective we have, beyond a reasonable doubt, the best club in the nation. Many other clubs would love to have what we have. To put this to point let’s go through my list of “Observations” again We have the largest active membership in the nation bar none. Our average entries at any given race rival most of the national entries. Other clubs would love to have a home track; with a few exceptions, the national tracks are no better than ours. And other regions have to fight for track time, schedule, reschedule, cancellations etc. It is a real testimony when we have racers from CA drive past Competitive Edge, Glen Helen, Perris etc. to come and race with us. The moto format exists for a reason. At many of the nationals we raced a 5 lap first moto, and to make up time we race a 3 lap second moto, and still don’t finish until 4:00 on Sunday. Our races run on time efficiently and most importantly safely. I was surprised at my first National that the trophies look a lot like ours. Besides if the trophies were any larger, the way Dave hands them out I could re-roof 2 houses. There is no such thing as a trophy presentation at many races. The way we recognize and honor competitors after a race day, I feel is what turns our club into a family. Of all the tracks I have ridden there have been a few epic tracks but at the end of the race what I remember is the gathering and not the track. Everyone rides the same track, some days are better than others but at least when we show up we know we will have a track and a crew working on it. Having said this I have a new observation. We have something pretty cool here, We have a track owner and a race promoter that really understand what we need, will listen to suggestions and most of all make sure that all I ever need to do is show up, pay my entry and go racing. I just want to thank everybody who came to the 2006-2007 Awards Banquet and made it the success it was! This is the largest turn out in the history of A.V.D.R.A., over 150 people. During the races on Saturday evening May 19th, I experience a Diabetic attack that required me to be transported to Del Webb Hospital. My blood sugar had increased to a high level without any warning to me. I would like to take this time to thank everyone for their help, concerns and best wishes. In addition, I want to thank those that helped Ed Kavanagh during and after the racing with those tasks that I usually do. This is a fantastic club and you the members are what make it so grand.
